The Chatterley Whitfield Colliery site is acknowledged to be the most comprehensive surviving example of a deep mine site in England, with a range of surviving structures and buildings unequalled in any other former or surviving coalfield site in Britain. Not usually open to the public, this free guided tour by Chatterley Whitfield Friends will allow you to appreciate the splendid array of buildings on-site, which makes Chatterley Whitfield so unique. There is no underground access, but there is limited access to site buildings subject to the approval of the City Council. The new Heritage Centre, new Memorial Garden and Artefacts Hall will be Open. Access will be very restrictive.

A guided walk around the Potteries town of Fenton focussing on the community buildings created by industrialists William Baker and William Meath Baker, which included everything from factories to houses, the library, church and town hall. Following on from our acclaimed "Exploring..." series of Heritage Open Day events, this event is co-ordinated by Potteries Heritage Society and led by Andy Perkin. Refreshments available before the event in the cafe at Fenton Town Hall.

Step into the everyday histories of the people who made Dudson, from the opening of the factory on Hope Street in 1810 to the thriving community hub we see today. This exhibition explores over two centuries of working life in The Potteries, placing the stories of Dudson’s workers alongside the wider world around them. While revolutions unfolded, railways spread across countries, and even humans set foot on the moon, everyday life at Dudson continued. The everyday histories shaped by clay, skill, and the potters art.

Visit the Tile Gallery featuring one of the best decorative tile collections in the country and ‘Flushed with Pride’ a remarkable gallery dedicated to the history of the toilet. Follow in the footsteps of John Ward (1837-1906), an amateur geologist, palaeontologist and ichthyologist, known for collecting fossils from the coal mines of Staffordshire. Ward grew up in Fenton and ran a drapers shop in Longton, but the fossils and specimens he collected are now to be found in museums and significant scientific collections throughout the world. He was a founder member and president of the North Staffordshire Naturalists Field Club and played an active role in the civic life of his home town of Longton. The walk is hosted by the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery and Potteries Heritage Society and led by ichthypaleontologist Rob Gagliano.
